About Calico Museum of Textiles
The Calico Museum of Textiles is widely regarded as one of the finest textile museums in the world. Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai founded it in 1949 at the family's Calico Mills; in 1983 it moved to the Sarabhai house and gardens in Shahibaug, where the Sarabhai Foundation manages it. The collection spans Mughal and provincial court textiles from the 15th to the 19th century, regional embroideries, tie-dyed and religious textiles, temple hangings, miniature paintings, South Indian bronzes and Jain art, with galleries explaining textile techniques. It is not a walk-in museum. Entry is only by guided tour, numbers are capped and places must be reserved in advance through the museum.
