Ahmedabad's year is organised around four big festivals. Navratri, in September or October, means nine nights of garba across the city; in 2026 it runs from 11 to 19 October. Diwali follows on 8 November 2026, with the Gujarati New Year on 10 November, after which much of the city shuts for a few days. On 14 January every year comes Uttarayan, when everyone is on a rooftop flying kites and the International Kite Festival takes over the Sabarmati Riverfront. And in the monsoon the Rath Yatra, organised by the Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur since 1878, takes chariots through the old city. The Kankaria Carnival from 25 to 31 December, the January flower show, Holi, Eid, Paryushan and Janmashtami fill the months between.
