Dance Events, Garba & Classes in Ahmedabad

Dance in Ahmedabad starts with garba. For nine nights of Navratri the whole city dances, from the state festival ground and commercial party plots along SG Highway to street garba in pols and housing societies, and studios run garba and dandiya workshops for weeks beforehand. The classical scene is just as serious. The Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Usmanpura, founded by Mrinalini and Vikram Sarabhai in 1949, teaches and stages Bharatanatyam and contemporary work at its Natarani amphitheatre, and Kadamb, the centre set up by the Kathak pioneer Kumudini Lakhia, has trained generations of dancers. Arangetrams and recitals fill Tagore Hall and Thakorbhai Desai Hall, and studios in Satellite, Bodakdev and Prahlad Nagar offer Bollywood, hip-hop, salsa and bachata classes and socials.
