New Year's Eve 2026 in Ahmedabad: Parties, Dry-State Rules, Tips
Updated 2026-10-12 ยท 7 min read ยท by the ahmedabad2go team
New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, with a Friday holiday to follow, and Ahmedabad will celebrate it the way it always does: with big, loud, late parties that serve no alcohol. Gujarat has been a dry state since 1960, so the night is built around DJs, live bands, buffets and mocktails at club lawns, hotels and party plots along SG Highway, Sindhu Bhavan Road and in Shela, with free street celebrations on C.G. Road and the last night of the Kankaria Carnival at the lake. This guide explains the options, what the law allows, where GIFT City fits in and how to get home.

Where the parties are
SG Highway, the ring road and Shela
Most ticketed parties are held in open-air party plots, banquet lawns and club grounds along the SG Highway belt and the Sardar Patel Ring Road. A typical pass covers entry, a DJ or live band, unlimited food and soft drinks, and a midnight countdown. Organisers sell couple, stag and group passes at different prices, and some are family-friendly with a children’s zone. Club O7 in Shela is one of the larger venues that sells public tickets. None of these places is on the metro.
Hotels
Hotels across west Ahmedabad and on Ashram Road sell gala dinners with a band or DJ, and some bundle a room for the night. These suit families and anyone who would rather not travel at 1 am. Book directly with the hotel and ask what the package includes.
Members’ clubs
Karnavati Club and Rajpath Club on SG Highway hold their own New Year nights, but these are for members and their signed-in guests. If you are invited, carry ID, as guest entries are registered at the gate.
C.G. Road and Sindhu Bhavan Road
For years the city’s free celebration has been a walk down C.G. Road at midnight. Sindhu Bhavan Road, the cafรฉ strip off SG Highway, now draws a second crowd. Both are simply places to be among people: cafรฉs and dessert bars stay open late and the road is full by 11 pm. Expect police barricades and a long walk from wherever you manage to park.
Kankaria Lake
The Kankaria Carnival, which runs from 25 to 31 December, closes its week on New Year’s Eve with stage performances and light displays around the lake. It is the largest public event in the city that night, and Kankaria East on the Blue Line is close by for the journey there.
After midnight
When the parties end, Ahmedabad goes to eat. Manek Chowk in the old city and the food streets near Law Garden and on SG Highway stay busy into the small hours.
We list confirmed parties, with what each pass includes, on our New Year’s Eve page and under nightlife as organisers announce them, usually from early December.
The law: what a dry state means on 31 December
Gujarat’s prohibition law, the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949, bans the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol without a permit, and it has applied since the state was formed in 1960. On New Year’s Eve this has practical consequences:
- No party can serve alcohol. Any listing that promises it is either mislabelled or illegal.
- Do not carry it. Bringing liquor to a venue, or driving back into Gujarat with bottles bought in Rajasthan, Diu or Daman, is an offence.
- Expect to be stopped. Police set up checkpoints with breathalysers on the main roads on 31 December and check vehicles through the night.
Visitor permits
People visiting from other Indian states, and foreign nationals, can apply for a liquor permit through the Prohibition and Excise department’s online permit system. Permit holders buy from licensed shops, most of them inside hotels. A permit is for private consumption, such as in your hotel room. It does not let you drink at a party, in a restaurant or in public.
GIFT City
GIFT City, the finance district in Gandhinagar district, is the one place in Gujarat with licensed “wine and dine” facilities. The rules were set out in a Home Department order of December 2023 and widened by an order dated 20 December 2025. Under the current order:
- Visitors from outside Gujarat and foreign nationals can be served on showing a valid photo ID from another state, or a passport. No separate permit is needed.
- Everyone served must be 21 or older.
- GIFT City employees hold a liquor access permit, and each can bring up to 25 visitors on temporary permits, accompanying them in person. This is the route for Gujarat residents.
- Where: in the licensed premises of hotels and restaurants, including their lawns, poolsides and terraces, and in hotel rooms.
- No takeaway. Liquor is served for consumption on the premises only.
In other words, GIFT City is a legal dinner-with-a-drink option for out-of-state visitors, not a party district. Venues there set their own New Year’s Eve bookings and cover charges, so call ahead. Our GIFT City guide has directions.
Police rules and road closures
The police commissioner’s New Year notification is normally issued in the last days of December, and the 2026 version was not available when this guide was written. Based on recent years, expect:
- C.G. Road closed to vehicles on the evening of 31 December
- Traffic restrictions and no-parking stretches on SG Highway and Sindhu Bhavan Road
- Breathalyser checkpoints on arterial roads and at the city’s entry points
- Deadlines for loudspeakers and DJs at open-air venues, which decide when parties wind up
Check the notification on the day and follow the organiser’s parking plan.
Getting there and back
- Metro: regular services wind down at around 10 pm, and no extended New Year’s Eve timetable had been announced at the time of writing. The metro is useful for getting to Kankaria or C.G. Road early in the evening. Do not rely on it for the return.
- Cabs and autos: book ahead where you can, and agree a pick-up point a few hundred metres from the venue gate. Surge pricing is steep between midnight and 2 am.
- Driving: carry your licence and vehicle papers, because you will probably pass a checkpoint. Party-plot parking is on open ground, and getting out after midnight can take half an hour.
- Two-wheelers: wear a helmet and avoid the highway flyovers late at night.
How to choose and book
- Read the inclusions. Compare couple and stag prices, whether dinner is included, and whether children are allowed.
- Book from the official link. Fake and duplicate passes circulate every year, and gate staff turn them away.
- Watch the dates. Early-bird prices usually end in mid-December, and the popular parties sell out in the last week.
- Check the refund policy. Open-air events are occasionally moved or cancelled when permissions change.
If you would rather skip the party
- Leave town. Many Amdavadis spend the long weekend in Mount Abu or Udaipur, each roughly 225โ260 km away in Rajasthan, or in Diu or Daman, where alcohol is legal. Hotels in all four are booked well ahead.
- Go to the desert. The Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo is open from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, and New Year’s week is among its busiest. See Rann Utsav trips.
- Start the year with music. The Saptak festival of Indian classical music begins on 1 January and runs for thirteen nights.
- Look ahead to the kites. Uttarayan is two weeks later, on 14 January, and our Uttarayan guide explains how to plan for it.
