About Manek Chowk

Manek Chowk is the old city's first square, laid out in the time of Ahmad Shah and named after the saint Maneknath. It changes character three times a day: a vegetable market in the morning, a jewellery and bullion market through the afternoon and, once the shutters come down, an open-air food market that runs late into the night. The stalls are known for buttery pav bhaji, cheese-loaded sandwiches, dosas in unlikely fillings, kulfi and the chocolate sandwich it is known for. For a city without bars, it is one of the main places people go after a film, a garba night or a match. The tombs of Ahmad Shah and of his queens, Rani no Hajiro, stand on either side of the square.
