About Sheth Mangaldas Girdhardas Town Hall
The Sheth Mangaldas Girdhardas Town Hall at Ellisbridge is one of Ahmedabad's oldest public auditoriums, built in the 1930s to a design by the architect Claude Batley and named after a mill-owning philanthropist. It stands at the western end of Ellis Bridge beside the M. J. Library, on the junction where Ashram Road begins, and is owned by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The hall has long been a home for Gujarati theatre, music competitions, kavi sammelans, public lectures and civic ceremonies, and local drama groups and schools still use it regularly. Its central position, with a bus stop named after it and Gandhigram metro station a few minutes' walk away, makes it easy to reach from both sides of the river.
