About Sarkhej Roza
Sarkhej Roza is a mosque, tomb and palace complex in the village of Makarba, about 7 km south-west of central Ahmedabad. It grew up around the home and tomb of the Sufi saint Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, who is said to have advised Sultan Ahmad Shah on founding his capital beside the Sabarmati. Construction began in 1445 and was completed in 1451, and Sultan Mahmud Begada later enlarged it with pavilions around a great stepped tank. Le Corbusier likened its composition to the Acropolis of Athens, and it is a Monument of National Importance. The courtyards remain an active place of worship, and in the cooler months have hosted evenings of Sufi and classical music staged by arts organisations.
