About Kankaria Lakefront
Kankaria is Ahmedabad's largest lake, an artificial tank of about 76 acres completed in 1451 under Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation rebuilt its edge as a gated, vehicle-free lakefront in 2007โ08 and inaugurated it on 25 December 2008 with the first Kankaria Carnival. The promenade runs for roughly 2.25 km around the water and takes in the Kamla Nehru Zoo, founded in 1951, the Atal Express toy train, Kids City, the Nagina Wadi island garden with its musical fountain, a tethered balloon ride, a butterfly park, water rides and long rows of food stalls. The week-long carnival returns every year in the last week of December with stage shows, light displays and performances by local artists.
