About Bhadra Fort & Bhadra Plaza

Bhadra Fort is the citadel Sultan Ahmad Shah I built in 1411 when he founded Ahmedabad, and it is still the starting point of the walled city. The square fort enclosed about 43 acres of palaces, mosques and gates; it later passed to the Mughals, the Marathas and the British, who used part of it as a prison. In 2014 the municipal corporation and the Archaeological Survey of India restored the fort and turned the space between it and Teen Darwaza, the triple gateway completed in 1415, into Bhadra Plaza, a pedestrian square. The Bhadrakali temple sits inside the fort walls. The plaza and the fort host heritage-week programmes, exhibitions and cultural evenings, and street vendors fill the square on most days.
