About Adalaj Stepwell (Adalaj ni Vav)

Adalaj ni Vav, also called the Rudabai stepwell, is a five-storey stepwell in the town of Adalaj, 18 km north of Ahmedabad and 5 km from Gandhinagar. An inscription credits it to Queen Rudabai and dates it to 1498; local legend adds that it was begun by her husband, the Vaghela chief Rana Veer Singh, and finished under Sultan Mahmud Begada. Built in sandstone, it descends through carved pavilions, balconies and an octagonal shaft to the water level, with Hindu and Islamic motifs side by side, and the air cools noticeably as you go down. It is a protected monument of national importance. In the cooler months its forecourt has been the setting for an annual evening of classical and fusion music.
