About Natarani (Darpana Academy)
Natarani is the open-air amphitheatre of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, on the riverbank at Usmanpura. The academy was founded in 1949 by the dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and the space scientist Vikram Sarabhai and has been directed for more than three decades by their daughter, the dancer and activist Mallika Sarabhai. It teaches Bharatanatyam, classical vocal music, mridangam, violin, flute, puppetry and Kalaripayattu, and its performance company tours widely. Natarani's stepped, thrust-stage seating gives every seat a close view, and its season of dance, theatre and music runs mainly through the cooler months. Each year Darpana also organises the three-day Vikram Sarabhai International Arts Festival. Programming leans towards contemporary work and the use of the arts for social change, for which the academy is known.
